1-bit bitmap

Also known as binary bitmap, black-and-white bitmap

A raster image in which every pixel has only two possible values, usually black or white.

In the workflow

Why 1-bit bitmap matters

In a prepared photo workflow, the black and white pixels form the final mark pattern. Resizing or dithering this file again can damage that pattern.

Practical check

How to evaluate it

Inspect the exported image at 100% zoom and confirm that its final pixels are only black or white. If the dimensions change, regenerate the dither from the continuous-tone source instead of scaling this bitmap.

Go deeper

Understand how one-bit dithering represents photo tones, how common algorithms differ, and how to choose without processing the image twice.

Prepare the pixels

Use the terminology in a real photo workflow.

Crop, tune, size, dither, and export a one-bit PNG on iPhone or iPad. Test the result on scrap with your machine and material guidance.
