Remove the background for a specific reason
A background should earn its engraving area. Keep it when it supplies context or a useful silhouette. Remove or simplify it when texture competes with a face, low contrast hides the subject boundary, or empty scenery adds scan time without helping the composition.
Background removal cannot fix a blurred subject or restore clipped detail. Choose the strongest source photo first.

Crop to the intended composition first
Set the aspect ratio and remove unused frame area before refining the mask. This lets you judge the edge at the pixel budget the engraving will actually receive.
Leave breathing room around hair, ears, shoulders, and objects that approach the crop boundary. A tight crop can make the finished piece feel accidental even when the mask is accurate.

Protect edges that carry identity
Inspect the hairline, glasses, whiskers, fingers, jewelry, and gaps between limbs. Remove detached background fragments, but avoid cutting a hard halo into naturally soft edges.
At final size, a clean silhouette matters more than microscopic mask detail that will disappear during reduction. Preview against both light and dark temporary backgrounds to expose missed regions and bright fringes.
Choose empty, flat, or restrained context
Transparent or plain output isolates the subject. A soft flat tone can retain separation before dithering. A small contextual shape may work when the composition needs grounding.
Avoid synthetic texture that adds dots without adding meaning. The laser cannot distinguish decorative noise from important subject detail.
Tune the isolated subject before dithering
Background removal changes the tonal balance of the frame. Revisit brightness, contrast, gamma, and sharpening after the mask is final, then set physical dimensions and DPI before selecting the dither.
Inspect both the composition and the one-bit pixels. If the edge becomes a dotted halo, return to the mask or tone stage instead of stacking another dither downstream.
