Identify the exact material before editing
Glass, transparent acrylic, translucent acrylic, mirrored acrylic, and coated surfaces do not share one universal photo workflow. A laser may frost, fracture, remove a coating, or expose a contrasting layer. The visible side may also be opposite the engraved side.
Confirm that the exact material is compatible with the laser and process. Follow the material supplier and machine manufacturer for safe handling, ventilation, focus, power, and supervision. Image preparation cannot make an unknown plastic safe to engrave.
Test polarity, orientation, and viewing side
A light or frosted mark on a transparent or dark surface often needs a different engraving signal than a dark mark on pale wood. xTool documents inversion as useful for transparent or translucent acrylic and mirrors. Epilog's glass photo workflow also includes deliberate inversion during preparation.
If the piece is engraved from the back and viewed from the front, the artwork may need mirroring as a separate transformation. Mirroring changes left and right. Inversion changes light and dark. Test both decisions with a labeled sample instead of treating them as the same control.
Use a clear subject and a quiet background
Transparent and frosted materials can offer less forgiving contrast than a bright screen. Choose a sharp source whose subject remains readable without relying on subtle color differences. Crop closely enough that the important features receive useful pixel area.
Background removal can help when a room, landscape, or patterned wall would turn into unnecessary texture. Keep contextual elements only when they remain legible at the final size and contribute to the composition.
Build separation without creating solid fields
Shape highlights, midtones, and shadows before dithering. The goal is a tonal map that can survive as separated marks, not a high-contrast preview with large clipped regions. Epilog's current glass workflow uses grayscale conversion, background treatment, inversion, and levels adjustments before output.
A dither turns the prepared tones into explicit mark and no-mark decisions. Inspect the result at 1:1. Large continuous fields may concentrate the physical process, while a sparse pattern may lose important features. Only a test on the actual material can show the useful balance.
Create the dot pattern at the final size
Choose the physical dimensions and a tested DPI or line interval before applying the final dither. Resizing a binary pattern later can merge, duplicate, or erase marks. This matters when a delicate frosted pattern depends on visible spacing.
Keep the prepared bitmap at that size during import. If the destination software applies another dither or resamples the image, the preview no longer represents the file you evaluated.
Use a small test that answers one question
Start with a representative crop and confirm polarity and orientation. Then keep the image fixed while testing the machine variables recommended for the exact laser and material. Inspect for readable tones, intact fine features, unwanted chipping or melting, and whether adjacent marks merge.
Do not transfer settings casually between glass types or between acrylic formulations. Surface color, transparency, additives, coatings, thickness, laser wavelength, focus, and ventilation needs can all differ.
Common questions
Should I invert a photo for glass engraving?
Often, but not universally. Test whether the process creates a light or frosted mark and confirm which side will be viewed. Apply inversion only once.
Do I need to mirror an image for acrylic engraving?
Mirror the artwork when engraving from the back and viewing from the front. Mirroring and inversion solve different problems, so verify each with a labeled test.
Can every acrylic be laser engraved?
No. Compatibility depends on the material formulation and laser. Identify the exact product and follow supplier and machine-manufacturer safety guidance before engraving it.
